When she tries to mimick the voices of her characters, they come across as cartoony and overdone. Side note: the narrator is fine when she’s using her normal voice. A cliched melodrama masquerading as science fiction. You have your loyal minority sidekick, the tenuous protagonist, the greedy antagonist, the impatient senator and the sexy but evil assistant pushing the antagonist into making evil decisions. Second, we have the most predictable characters imaginable, aside from the token “Rosie Perez” scientist who is a brilliant scientist, but can’t manage to speak anything other than ghetto Spanglish. The author seems to be oblivious to the incredible scale of such an endeavor and the dozens of teams and thousands of specialists required to undertake such an endeavor. First, we have a massive 28,000 square foot gateway machine, and pretty much one woman who programmed it, designed it, built it, and is the only person who can “finesse” the massif smashing (authors word), that machine into working properly. What could go wrong?Īuthor spends more time justifying the feasibility of his science fiction than he does in building a believable story and characters. to lead, a test run of a multi-billion dollar, top secret dimension opening technology, in downtown NY, even though, the last time she tried it, she caused the Fukashima disaster. just before she's offered a position on top. She was pondering selling her jewelry as she downed a bottle of Gin. If the ending throws you off,(no pun intended), & its not enticing enough, you may want to know, the story includes a sultry seductress, actually, a reckless, hard hearted Asian scientist, but she is super hot, and drunk, in a skimpy blouse & tight skirt. Instead of hanging from a cliff, though, our would-be-hero is hanging from the ledge of the 58th floor. at least it appears that way appears to be certain doom, when we are informed that the first part is over. a little too like the real world, but oh well, we still have a potent mix for an end of the world story. Of course, there are the greedy, self-serving Individuals, who, of course, are incompetent, and as usual, in charge.
With a beautiful genius leading woman, heroic ex-military man who is devoted to her, flying creatures from a Jurassic World, big explosions, EMPs, dimensional rifts, lots of collateral damage(corpses everywhere) a Sudden end-of-all-worlds threat, new technology or at least, it should work this time technology, (a portal to another world, to mine, drill, log and exploit, since we've just about destroyed this one). arghhhh! I recommend this, especially, if you like Michael Critchton. The major flaw is the cliff hanger ending, without the sequel being available yet. The story: Classic Sci-fi formula, with no filler minimal but effective character development.
